Hermes Agent · Buying guide
Hermes Agent: do it yourself, hosted, or installed by your IT provider
Short answer: Hermes is free; you pick who runs it: you, a host (from $5.99/month, as reported) or your IT provider at $595 a month at founding sites (first 100) for as long as the box is live (draft pricing).
Hermes Agent costs nothing to download, so the licence never decides this. The jobs around it do: the machine, the model, the tool settings, the testing, the updates and the sign-off on every reply. Each path hands off more of those jobs than the one before, and the price climbs with it. Pick the cheapest path that still takes the jobs you cannot carry. Not sure which? Tell us what you want Hermes to do in the form below; a person on our team replies.

Doing it yourself is cheapest because you carry all seven jobs
Seven jobs surround Hermes Agent: provide the machine, install it, choose and run the model, switch risky tools off, score it on your own work, apply updates, and approve each reply. Doing it yourself leaves all seven with you. Hosted Hermes leaves at least two (scoring and approving; the model, tool settings and updates vary by host, as reported on 13 Oct 2026). An IT-provider install leaves one: approving each reply. The step-by-step split between you, your IT provider and Staffbox on an installed unit is on the company page; the table further down compares the three paths.
If you or someone you employ is comfortable with a terminal, DIY is the cheapest path and the most flexible. The official docs give the install steps for Linux, macOS and WSL2, and walk through Ollama and MCP. fact
What you take on: choosing a model that clears Hermes's minimum context length (reported as 64K; see the 64K page), deciding which tools stay switched on, watching a project that ships often (v0.21.7 was the latest release on 13 Oct 2026), and building and scoring whatever business task you want done. None of that is hidden. It is the job. For a developer it is a learning project (our view). For an owner of a 12-person distributor it is a second job.

Hosted Hermes is live in minutes for a few dollars, on the host's servers
Hosted Hermes removes the install. One example, read on 13 October 2026: Hostinger lists a managed Hermes Agent plan at $5.99 a month, with a stated renewal of $11.99 a month for two years, and a 30-day money-back guarantee. As reported by Hostinger's own page; prices change, so check before you buy. as reported
That is far cheaper than any installed option, and it is live in minutes. If you want to try Hermes Agent for personal tasks, marketing drafts or research, hosted is a sensible way to start. What the host takes off your plate differs by vendor: one runs a managed app, another hands you a prepared server and leaves Hermes to you. The dated detail, with their strengths and gaps, is on Staffbox vs hosted Hermes.
The trade-off for a business with price lists and customer emails is where the data goes. A hosted agent runs on the host's servers, and it typically calls a model provider over the internet. Staffbox's default is the opposite: models run on the box, the model server listens on 127.0.0.1, and no cloud provider is configured. fact
An IT-provider install hands off every job except approving each reply
What you pay for on this path is not Hermes itself. You get a finished quote desk: a brain built from your files, a quote action, a draft-only inbox, a scorecard, a monthly re-test, and an IT provider who installs and supports it. First line of support is your IT provider; second line is Staffbox. The worker drafts and a person sends; Staffbox has no sending code, so the one job you keep is the one that should stay with a person.
It fits a firm that sends at least 8 quotes a week from a price list: distributors, fabricators, cabinet and millwork shops, and IT providers.
Price: $595 a month at founding sites (first 100) for as long as the box is live, free 30-day pilot, no onboarding fee. From unit 101, $695 a month plus $1,800 onboarding. Mac Studio sites are quoted per site.
Choose by the job and the data, then test the payback with your own numbers
| Path | Who sets it up | Where it runs | Who is on the hook when it breaks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Do it yourself | You, from the official install command | Your own computer or a rented server | You |
| Hosted Hermes | The host provides a prepared server or a managed app | The host's cloud | Split: the host covers its infrastructure, you cover Hermes and its settings (varies by host) |
| Installed by your IT provider (Staffbox) | Your IT provider installs a Staffbox unit; Staffbox builds the brain | A Mac mini in your building | First line: your IT provider. Second line: Staffbox |
- Pick DIY if you have the skills and want the lowest cost and full control.
- Pick hosted if you want to try Hermes quickly on tasks that do not involve customer pricing or private files.
- Pick installed with your IT provider if the job is quoting from your own price list, you want the data in your building, and you want a score before you pay.
The installed path only makes sense if it pays for itself. The return in our offer is "quotes per week × minutes saved per quote × loaded hourly rate". It is a projection until a pilot runs. Here is the arithmetic with placeholder inputs, not measured results.
| Input | Placeholder value |
|---|---|
| Quotes a week | 20 |
| Minutes saved per quote | 10 |
| Loaded hourly rate | $40 |
| Hours saved a week | 20 × 10 ÷ 60 = 3.3 |
| Value a week | 3.3 × $40 = about $133 |
| Value a month (4.33 weeks) | about $577 |
At those inputs the value is close to the $595 monthly price. That is why the pass bar and the measured minutes saved matter more than the sticker price. A firm with 60 quotes a week and 10 saved minutes each would see about three times that value. A firm with 8 quotes a week would see less than the price. Plug in your own numbers, then let the pilot replace them with measured ones.
